TUESDAY December 19 Vegetarianism and a high IQ study Vegetarians, at this time of year, have to be careful who they talk to. A big traditional feast is being planned, with a bird as the centrepiece. It's tempting for hosts to see those who don't want to eat this as 'troublesome guests' for whom different food must be made. Those who do not eat meat though, can be encouraged by a new scientific study. It proves a link between vegetarianism and a high IQ. Really though, nobody should be surprised by this. Einstein, after all was a vegetarian. I'm taking the week off from my regular daily forecasts while I prepare my nut roast... and my in depth forecasts for 2007. I'm leaving my colleague Kathryn Cassidy in charge of the daily predictions. I think you'll find her very incisive and accurate. I'll be back with a set of weekly predictions next Saturday (23rd December) and you can of course, still read my week ahead forecasts for THIS week if you haven't already done so. WEDNESDAY December 20 Christmas Tree preparations We finally put our Christmas tree up today. First, we had to hunt one down. Many places had sold out. I got recognised in one shop. The lady looked at me strangely. "Couldn't I have predicted that Christmas was coming?" But that was WHY I had left it so late. For weeks, I have been writing Christmas predictions, preparing readings long in advance for publications with early print dates. To help get me in the mood, I'd even been playing Christmas music. So in my head, the decorations were complete. It was only when I began my break that I looked up and noticed I hadn't actually done any physical stuff! Between now and Friday, I'm hanging holly, wrapping presents and (because I can never really stop) working on my big predictions for 2007. I'll be back on Saturday with Festive week ahead forecasts. Till then, your daily predictions are being written by my esteemed colleague Kathryn Cassidy. THURSDAY December 21 Nativity midwinter solstice comment Today, the rising Sun 'changes direction' and begins to retrace its steps along the horizon. To the ancients, the shortest day of the year was a deeply magical moment. They timed the year's most important festival to coincide with it. In an early attempt to avoid multiculturalism, the early Christian church simply copied this practice. Although nobody knows when Jesus was born, the religious authorities simply 'gave' the nativity to the midwinter solstice feast. I'll be back on Saturday with your festive forecasts. FRIDAY December 22 Kathryn Cassidy Kathryn Cassidy has been writing your forecasts all week while I have been working on New Year predictions and making a few festive preparations. I have much enjoyed her work and I hope that you have too. Meanwhile Kathryn will be writing your weekend forecasts tomorrow and I will be back with your full Christmas week ahead forecasts. |
SATURDAY December 23 Solstice Feast I'll be back at work, writing, on Boxing Day, straight after my Vegetarian Christmas Dinner. Or should that be, Solstice Feast? Not even the most devout Christian believes that Christ was actually born at Christmas. The early religion, though, needed to assert its authority. So it built churches on sites that were sacred to the ancient Britons and attached its festivals to dates that had always been important. Of these, our ancestors most valued the turning point of the Sun at midwinter. This weekend we celebrate a tradition much older than a mere couple of thousand years. |
