PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

Witch Report

Hi Jonathan,
I often come across spells, sold over the web. Is there any credibility in the claims of wiccans, hoodoo or vampyre witches... or spell-masters? Have you ever met people who can perform miracles? Louise

Dear Louise,
Such offers and claims are usually sincere. If those people say that's who they are and what they do, I believe them. I don't, though, believe 'in' them - so their spells would not work for me. It is never a ritual, ceremony, incantation or a 'charm' that makes a miracle happen. It is always the 'belief' that goes into it.

Cell Bio Date Debate

Scientists have announced the development of an artificial living cell. I'm fascinated by the timing of this news. It made the headlines just before the weekend, while Jupiter and Saturn were edging towards a rare, intense opposition. This is a once-a-decade alignment that has long been associated with ethical debate. Unusually, though, this year, it also forms part of another opposition between Saturn and Uranus, which signifies scientific progress. The rights and wrongs of 'synthetic life' will no doubt be debated for many years to come. There can be no debate, though, that these are truly historic times.

How Far the Moon?

How far away is the Moon? About 384,403 kilometres, give or take 20,000, depending on the time of the month. It looks much nearer, though, in a fascinating, high-resolution picture that has been compiled in aid of charity from about 1,000 photographs, all taken on the same night, in the garden of the astronomer, Sir Patrick Moore. Sir Patrick is no friend of astrology. He insists heavenly bodies are simply rocks in space without meaning or message. Even so, he's created an awe-inspiring image. It's at www.lunarworldrecord.com where you can also donate to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

Time for a Blake

'He who doubts from what he sees
Will ne'er believe, do what you please.
If the sun and moon should doubt,
They'd immediately go out...'

For many, recent weeks have triggered much doubt. The opposition of Jupiter and Saturn has brought great change. Yet, though full moons often create restlessness, tonight's offers reassurance. It even offers serenity. As William Blake also said in the same poem, what's needed is:

'To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour...'

Friday May 28
Surf's Up

Some people are finding life very stressful at the moment. Others are experiencing much joy. Few are on middle ground. We're all being drawn towards emotional and psychological extremes. During this intense phase, sudden change is much more likely than usual. The ups can suddenly lead to downs. And the downs, no matter how deep they may be, can unexpectedly turn to soaring highs. It's a natural side effect of the rare alignments that we're starting to see in the sky. The trick is probably not to aim for stability but to try to surf the tides of change.

Your June Monthly Forecast

It is hard to convey the importance of June's celestial outlook. For every sign, there's a different development. Jupiter conjoins Uranus, bringing energy to Pisces, Sagittarius, and Aquarius and Aries. Mercury completes the last of three right angles to Mars, creating relief and resolution for Gemini, Virgo and Scorpio. We get a life-changing lunar eclipse in Capricorn that will also touch the lives of Cancerians. And there's the much-awaited departure of Mars from Leo. The month is hardly due to be quiet for Taureans and Librans either. No matter what sign you are, expect positive movement this month.
