All Change
|
Once upon a time, there was a very traditional, reasonably predictable world. Then, along came a rare opposition between Saturn and Uranus; the first since the early 1960s. 'Aha' said the astrologers. 'This is going to bring amazing change.' Sure enough, on the day these two planets first aligned, Barack Obama became US president. Saturn and Uranus move slowly. Their opposition is still going on and its influence has been strong recently. Just look at what has happened in Britain! Nor is it over. More unconventional changes await us all soon, and not just in the corridors of power.

Crude Analysis
|
Jonathan, The oil leak off the Gulf coast of the US is a major
environmental concern. Do you foresee a successful capping and clean-
up process or will this spell devastation for an already hard hit
area? T
Dear T, Both, sadly. I predict they'll cap the leak within a week or
two but the mopping-up may take far longer. On the plus side, though,
this is happening to a nation of gas-guzzlers. America has had little
enthusiasm for cleaner, greener fuel... till now. If their new
priorities influence other nations, we may yet all be glad.

Akshaya Tritiya
|
Across India, last weekend, many couples got married. Apparently, there were 50,000 weddings in Mumbai alone, putting strain on hotels, caterers and florists. It was ' Akshaya Tritiya', traditionally a most auspicious day. I'm no expert on Vedic astrology. I 'roughly get it', in much the same way as a guitarist can just about see how to play a sitar. I do know, though, that not all Akshaya Tritiyas are the same. This year, there was no shubh mahurat or shubh lagna. There were also several doshas of the nakshatra! So if you missed it, you didn't necessarily miss out!

Thursday May 20
|
Yesterday, I mentioned 'Akshaya Tritiya', a traditionally auspicious day for marriage in India. Thousands of weddings took place last weekend - but many couples had difficulty getting the flowers, food or venues they wanted. 'Akshaya Tritiya' is also supposed to favour the purchase of gold, but the price shot up. Indian astrologers say exceptional circumstances made this lucky occasion less lucky than usual. I'm inclined to see it as a point in favour of western astrology where, before you can say if a day is good or bad, you must check how heavenly alignments match the birth-charts of individuals.

Belt Up
|
Usually, there are two broad stripes across Jupiter, the lower one
broken by a great red spot that looks a bit like a belt buckle. Recent
photographs show the spot but the belt has vanished. This has happened
before and is nothing to fear but it's hard to not read something into
this, especially as Jupiter's current opposition to Saturn soon forms
part of the rare 'T square'; a heavenly 'tug-o-war' that signifies
major historic change in 2010. It's as if the planet of hope is now
preparing to give its all to this coming cosmic tussle.

Your Week Ahead
|
Full Moons happen often enough yet they're special, for different
reasons each time. Jupiter-Saturn oppositions are also different every
time, but far more infrequent. I haven't seen more than five in my
lifetime... and I'm no spring chicken! One reason why this week's
alignment is so important is because it forms part of a wider picture
that's even more unusual. I'll say much more about this soon. But even
if you think you've seen many signs of a changing world lately,
there's much more change to come! The current cosmic climate is
intense but it's also very positive.
