PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY

October 12 2009 to October 18 2009

Monday October 12
Triple the Light Fantastic

Tomorrow, if the sky is clear and it's still dark when you wake, go where you can get good view of the eastern horizon. Over where the Sun rises, you'll find three planets one above the other. The brightest, and highest, is Venus. Below it, to the left, there's Saturn. Look down again for Mercury... which is normally quite hard to spot. A triple conjunction! What could provide a better start to the day? This evening, you'll see Jupiter in a similar spot. It changes direction this week. For all with high hopes and big dreams, that's also auspicious.

Tuesday October 13
Sister Act

Dear Jonathan,
My twin sister was born five minutes after me. We are both Aries but lead different lives in different countries. Hers seems to be much harder than mine. I keep having a dream where she has a baby daughter and I keep promising to visit but never go. Michelle

Dear Michelle,
Two people born close in time have much in common... but twins often maximise small differences between their charts; unconsciously dividing up shared character traits. I doubt that your dream has a literal meaning. It just reflects your feeling that you should help your sister more.

Wednesday October 14
Feeling the benefit

Now that Jupiter has changed direction, it's not just Sagittarians and Pisceans who should soon notice a change in the pace of life. Jupiter governs expansion, extravagance, faith, fairness, justice and jollity. Many people have noticed a shortage, lately, of all the above. They're coming back into fashion - and we're all going to feel the benefit. If you've been hoping, for some while, to discover a fresh source of inspiration or see a real reason to look forward to the future, events over the next few days should make it much easier for you to identify such a blessing.

Thursday October 15
Girl Power

Dear Jonathan,
Last year's rare Saturn/Uranus opposition coincided with Obama's historic victory. I notice it has repeated itself in the past few weeks bringing unprecedented recognition for women in power. Angela Merkel's electoral triumph in Germany, Hilary Mantel's belated recognition with the Booker award and a record number of women getting Nobel prizes! Eliza

Dear Eliza,
I always expected this opposition to bring more power to women. Indeed, I got rather carried away and famously jumped to one conclusion too many! Your observations, though, are most interesting. And the alignment is due to happen twice more next year.

Friday October 16
Dead Wrong

Dear Jonathan:
My friend, who studied astrology 60 years ago, says he was taught to find the 'death point' in a horoscope. Is there such a thing? Elise

Dear Elise,
Yes, in theory, but here's my favourite story. Once, an astrologer approached a king and said: 'Your majesty. Put your affairs in order. You will die soon.' The king said: 'Could your charts be wrong?' The astrologer replied: 'They never lie.' The king asked: 'When is it written that you will die?' The astrologer replied: 'I'll live another 21 years.' So the king ordered his head chopped off immediately!

Saturday October 17
Lies, damned lies, and ecliptics

Mars takes a couple of years to go once round the zodiac. So, on average, it spends about two months in each sign. Averages, though, can be misleading. Mars now arrives at the 120th degree of the ecliptic and it won't reach the 150th degree till June 2010. That's an unusually long time for it to spend in any sector of the sky. The sector in question is what we astrologers call 'Leo', though this does not align exactly with the constellation of the same name. For all born under the Lion, though, these are energising times that promise success. And for the rest of us? Times when we can expect strong leaders to motivate great change.
