PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY
November 5th to November 11th 2007

MONDAY November 5
Spotting Comet Holmes

Many things can make a comet hard to see. Cloudy skies. Bright city lights. Full moons. Still, though, it's worth looking tonight.

FROM THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE (EUROPE, USA ETC)
Go out after dark (the later it is, the higher it will be). Face the direction where the Sun usually rises and look to the left of there. Stare at the great 'join the dots' puzzle in the sky till you see letter W, lying on its side. To the right and down a bit is the constellation of Perseus. Comet Holmes is at bottom left.

FROM THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE (JAPAN, AUSTRALIA ETC)
Go out after 10pm. 1 or 2am is best. Face between North and North-East. Stare just above the horizon until you see Mirfak, the brightest star in the Perseus constellation. Just to the right of Mirfak you can see the comet's fuzzy glow. In a built-up area, you will need a high vantage point. The comet is low so open areas with low horizons are best.

TUESDAY November 6
The meaning of comets

For royals and rulers, comets are inauspicious. The more a leader seems 'established' in power, the more likely they are to lose their authority. It's hard not to wonder whether Comet Holmes carries a special warning for President Musharraf of Pakistan and Prime Minister Howard of Australia. Comets also herald natural disasters. It's hard, too, not to see a connection to the fires and floods that have recently ravaged California and Mexico. Comets, though, are not just about doom and gloom. They traditionally imply the imminent emergence of great spiritual teachers.

WEDNESDAY November 7
Comet Holmes, Zodiac position

Comet Holmes is mesmerising people everywhere. Alan MacRobert of the Boston Globe described his binocular view as a 'luminous jellyfish swimming straight at us in the depths of the night'. It's not, though, approaching us. It's heading away. And you don't need binoculars to see it. Just a clear North East view. As we enter the Dark of the Moon, it should be even easier to spot tonight. Look in the constellation of Perseus. That's a long way from the zodiac, but if you want to know the 'interpolated ecliptic position', it is around seven degrees of tropical Gemini.

THURSDAY November 8
Is there anybody there?

Once, all heavenly bodies had poetic names. These days, it's a bit dry. The amazing, exploding comet in the North East each evening, for example, is 17P Holmes. 41 light years further away, there's a star called 55 Cancri. These are not exotic titles but the objects they represent are pretty special. 55 Cancri has several planets orbiting it and though none, yet, has turned out to be 'Earth like', a new discovery now makes it more likely that a world like our own may soon be found. Perhaps the comet portends proof, at last, that we are not alone.

FRIDAY November 9
The Deeper Valley of Diwali

For the Hindus and Sikhs in our communities, this is Diwali, the festival of lights. Traditionally, it occurs at the November New Moon or, to be more precise, the 'No Moon', when the Moon cannot be seen. I normally call this 'The Dark of The Moon'. Every moonless night has mystical signficance, but this particular New Moon, in India at least, has a spiritual connotation. The Diwali Moon (pronounced 'deeper-valley' in some parts of the world) heralds a time that, according to some yogis, is most auspicious for performing a three-day meditation that should bring forth permanent enlightenment!

SATURDAY November 10
A rewrite of the cosmic rulebook

Venus has moved into Libra. Mercury moves back into Scorpio. Mars, meanwhile, stands still. That's pretty potent. It implies a rewrite of the cosmic rulebook - a subtle shift of the heavenly goalposts. No matter what sign you are, it's important not to assume that, just because something has been difficult in the past, it will continue to prove arduous now. The things that stand in our way, are not necessarily the things we imagine to be working against us. The real obstacles to progress this week are precedent and pessimism. If you summon faith, it will heed your call.
