PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY
December 4th to 10th December 2006

MONDAY December 4
Precession of the equinoxes

An ancient machine for measuring planetary positions proves Greek technology was far more advanced than experts realised. Hipparchus, who is being linked to this device, famously noticed that while planets move swiftly, the stars move too, slowly over centuries. Once they understood this, many stargazers started measuring the zodiac differently; employing a system that would never change. With jawdroppping irony, some modern astronomers now try to discredit astrology by saying, 'Look! Those silly astrologers don't even know the stars have shifted since the olden days.' Er... yes we do. Thanks to Hipparchus, we saw it coming 2,000 years ago.

TUESDAY December 5
Venus, Goddess of the Elusive

Why does Venus rule both love and money? I feel a little depressed to think that in the eyes of the cosmos, these two topics are intrinsically linked.
Nick

Dear Nick,
Actually, Venus doesn't rule money. Matters of cash and commerce are entirely in Mercury's domain. Venus governs luxury and opulence. It's a planet of wealth, just as much as it is planet of attraction and seduction. The Moon, meanwhile, represents love of a less passionate, more permanent kind. So you needn't feel too depressed. The ancients simply saw Venus as the goddess of all things elusive yet desirable.

WEDNESDAY December 6
Fingers of Fate

Dear Jonathan,
I have heard that our fingers each represent a planet. If this is true, which is which? Best wishes,
Phillida

Dear Phillida,
Many textbooks, especially from the 18th and 19th centuries, say your little finger is your Mercury finger. Working in from there, the next finger represents the Sun; then Saturn; then Jupiter. The thumb is 'Venus'. There are, though, other traditions of hand analysis that do not make such connections. I can't help but prefer these. While I have great respect for the principles of palmistry, as an astrologer, I think planets belong in the sky!

THURSDAY December 7
Triple conjunction

A rare and glorious triple conjunction takes place this weekend. You can see it if only you can get up while it is still dark! Look east, towards the spot where you'd be expecting the Sun to rise. You'll see Mercury and Jupiter delightfully close, low on the horizon. Mars is fainter but it is there too. The three form an 'arrowhead' at the base of the sky. The alignment peaks on Sunday - but Friday, Saturday and Monday mornings will also provide rewarding viewing. This classic 'auspicious omen' suggests good news for all of us, one way or another.

FRIDAY December 8
More on the triple conjunction

Do you suffer from insomnia? Are you an early riser? If so, consider yourself lucky this weekend! You'll be up in time to see a rare and glorious triple conjunction just before sunrise, low in the east. Mercury and Jupiter, as long as there is no cloud, should be relatively easy to spot. Mars may prove harder to see. even if it is dripping with water and teeming with newly-discovered life. The alignment peaks on Sunday but Saturday and Monday will also provide rewarding viewing. For Sagittarians, Pisceans, Geminis, Virgos, Aries and Scorpios It's a classic 'auspicious omen'.

SATURDAY December 9
Your Week Ahead

Last month, we had five celestial bodies in Scorpio. This week, briefly, we see the same five in Sagittarius. Venus, though, soon moves on into Capricorn, bringing much-needed reasons to celebrate for all born under the sign of the sea-goat. It's already been a lively month and it is about to get even more exciting. For some, this means tension. For others, it means adventure. For those who simply want a quiet life, it means there's not much chance of peace. Even in comparatively quiet situations, the influence of all those heavenly objects in the part of the sky that governs philosophy implies some deep moral dilemmas to wrestle with!
