PREVIOUS THOUGHTS FOR THE DAY
October 28th to October 31st 2002

MONDAY OCTOBER 28
Venus and Mars are alright...

Dear Jonathan
Recently you said that Venus and Mars were at odds with one another in the sky. I seem to recall that Paul McCartney once wrote a song which went: 'Venus and Mars are alright' How would that work? Yours sincerely DM
Dear DM
I don't know how much astrology Paul McCartney had studied, so I can't be quite sure what he meant. To me though, that phrase neatly sums up a harmonious link between Venus, at the ninth degree of Scorpio, and Mars, at the ninth degree of Libra. Whilst they remain exactly 30 degrees apart they are very much 'all right' and so thankfully, are most of us.

TUESDAY OCTOBER 29
Quaoar

Over the weekend, I met up with some fellow astrologers. They were getting very excited about Quaoar, the brand new planet, a billion miles past Pluto. On December 4, a lunar eclipse will occur exactly 'on top' of this new discovery. It is as if the sky itself is urging us to look in this direction. When I remarked that Quaoar is an odd name, they got me to say it slowly, Kwa-Oh-Wah, over and over again. Then they pointed out that this is exactly how the ancient Tongva people of North America would have chanted the name of their 'creation god' and heavenly protector!
WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 30
Protest rally in Washington DC

Dear Jonathan,
On Saturday, I attended my very first protest rally - a huge event in Washington DC against the invasion of Iraq. Now, I have attended many sporting events and concerts and been in crowds from between 5,000 and 50,000 but there were more people there than I have ever seen in my life. I was inspired and thrilled yet, when I got home to North Carolina, the radio said that only 10,000 attended! Then I remembered what you had said about the enormous London march you went on and how it was played down by the press. What is going on here?

THURSDAY OCTOBER 31
Celebrating Samhain

Today, we celebrate Samhain, the old Celtic festival in which people honoured the spirits of their ancestors. The Church adapted this to create All Hallows' Eve - a night in which only their saints were remembered. But Hallowe'en determinedly retained its ancient association with all things magical and ethereal. Traditionally, it marked the end of one annual cycle and the start of another. Thus, it was seen as a 'night outside of time' an evening when the veil between the worlds was at its thinnest. It was a time to reach out to those who have departed and be guided, by them, in methods of mediumship, divination and clairvoyance.
